Messrs. Statham and Johnson left Simba choking on their fumes as shiny-domed petrolhead bromance Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw raced to the top of the chart. Delve a little deeper into the figures, however, and it becomes clear that the franchise spin-off only achieved this feat with the assistance of two full days of previews. It’s actually doing much worse than previous instalments in the series. 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, for example, opened on £14m. The Lion King, meanwhile, joined fellow Disney release Toy Story 4 in sailing over the £50m mark this week. Other kidflicks on release are struggling to pick up the school holiday pocket money crumbs from nippers who’ve already seen the big two releases. The Angry Birds Movie 2 was the second highest charting new release, but took a third of the previous film’s opening haul of £2.1m. Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans, meanwhile, suffered a big 60% tumble in its second week on release, falling to ninth place.
