Most critics would be delighted if the animated Peter Rabbit wound up in one of Mr. McGregor’s pies. But most critics don’t pay for cinema tickets, and the floppy-eared garden pest and his pals have become a huge hit among smaller cinemagoers. After four weeks at the top, the film has now even surpassed the earnings of the far superior first Paddington movie. John Krasinski’s well-received horror flick A Quiet Place had to settle for second place, but is still well ahead of its spooky rival Ghost Stories. Coming out romcom Love, Simon is doing well for Fox, suggesting that romantic comedy audiences welcome a twist on formulaic fare. Outside the chart, its arthouse counterpart 120 BPM is also packing ’em in on a much smaller number of screens. Losers? Well, perhaps unsurprisingly there was little interest in the Death Wish remake, which failed to chart. Disappointingly, Thoroughbreds suffered a similar fate despite being a much better film. Elsewhere, Black Panther is poised to break through the £50m barrier and now ranks as the second most successful Marvel Cinematic Universe film at the UK box office, just behind Marvel Avengers Assemble.
