Adventure Film Festival heads for Bristol
Should you need any encouragement to arise from your New Year torpor, the 10th annual Adventure Film Festival arrives at the Cube from Jan 22-23. There are ten films spread over two programmes, each showcasing the endeavours of those who undertake brave and/or foolhardy acts so you don’t have to. Here’s a full round-up of what’s on offer:
PROGRAMME ONE
Undo Europe
BASE-jumping in reverse. Watch as these daft risk-takers leap upwards through clouds and on to the tops of vertiginous cliffs.
Forgotten Dirt
Fancy cycling through Afghanistan’s remote Wekhan Corridor? Mountain biker Matt Hunter and his team do, dodging yak herders and snowstorms as they pedal furiously through the breathtaking scenery.
Karun
Join a pair of Brits as they track Iran’s 450-mile long Karun river from source to mouth in the Persian Gulf on foot, in inflatable kayaks and by bicycle, enjoying much traditional Persian hospitality along the way.
Sufferfest
Climbers Cedar Wright and Alex Honnold embark on an epic three-week mission to bike and climb all fifteen of California’s 14ers (peaks of 14,00ft and over). As the title suggests, there’s much pain and suffering involved.
Cradle of Storms
A bunch of surfer dudes forsake sun-kissed beaches for the Aleutian Islands, which arch from Alaska towards Russia in some of the most volatile waters in the North Pacific.
Mission Antarctica
Freeride snowboarder Xavier de le Rue and chums head for perilous Antarctica to whiz past bemused penguins.
PROGRAMME TWO
Beauty of the Irrational
Ultrarunner’ Ryan Sandes sets out to break the speed record for racing along Namibia’s infamous Fish River Canyon Trail.
Higher
Jeremy Jones has a plan to clamber up and snowboard down Shangri La, a 21,400-ft peak in the Himalayas. The crazy fool.
Continue
Welcome to the world of ‘extreme canyoning’. A Swiss/Brazilian team clamber up the Swiss Alps to show off their “death-defying leaps, eye-popping back flips and graceful dives”.
North of the Sun
A pair of chums travel to Norway’s remote north coast and build their own cabin from bits of crap they find lying on the beach before enjoying the pleasures of surfing in sub-zero temperatures and near-darkness.
