Bristol Comedy Den to host award-winning non-verbal comedian Alex Gibbon

By Sarski Anderson  Monday Mar 25, 2024

Five years ago, comedian and former singer Alex Gibbon lost the ability to speak due to a neurological disorder.

They came to the world of standup well after this point, and have therefore always entertained audiences as a non-verbal performer.

Taking to the stage on a mobility scooter dubbed ‘Miss Carriage’, Gibbon’s comedy sits at the intersection between disability and queer culture.

“I have used comedy to educate, captivate, and titillate my audiences as I demolish society’s stereotypes and expectations of how disabled people are ‘supposed’ to be,” they reflect.

Their solo standup hour Alex Gibbon is: Fat, Femme & Crippled won the Phoebe Waller-Bridge ‘Keep it Fringe’ award in 2023, which enabled Gibbon to take the show up to Edinburgh that summer.

More recently, they made their debut TV appearance, reaching the semi-finals of the BBC New Comedy Awards.

“I prove that being disabled does not mean you can’t live a great life,” they say. “And that queer and disabled are not communities exclusive of one another. I’m both. I celebrate both. And yes, I make jokes at the expense of both.”
