Launching new circus projects and ideas

By Lowie Trevena  Monday Dec 21, 2020

Launch Pad, a space for creatives to explore projects and ideas, has opened for applicants.

The residency programme hosted by the Invisible Circus is a place for performers to develop ideas and create new circus.

The circus has opened its residencies to solo artists as well as collectives. The two residencies, which will take place from February 1 to July 2 and July 5 to December 31, will take place at Unit 15 in St Philip’s.

“As part of their community ethos, we want to encourage new shows, performers, and collectives to make their plans a reality in 2021,” says the Invisible Circus team, who have hosted shows including Futur Ville at Ashton Court and the Red Rebel Brigade as part of the Extinction Rebellion Invisible Theatre.

The circus company have also taken part in Boomtown Festival and held events at the SS Great Britain.

“We’ve been running the Launch Pad residency scheme since 2018 and it’s been a joy to see what has been created by those involved and how much the various projects have grown,” says Becky Boucherat, one of the Invisible Circus team.

“2021 feels like an especially important year to be supporting artists after work opportunities having been so few and far between during the pandemic and funding becoming even more competitive.

“It is also so important to keep bringing art to audiences; the arts can be such an incredible way to raise positivity, bring communities together and encourage positive change – and long may that continue!”

The aim of the programme is to help artists turn their ideas into reality, make new connections and inspire others.
At the same time, the circus has ensured that the programme is accessible, taking away a need for adequate funds to get the work started or being part of a bigger company.

It’s the company’s way of giving back to its circus community, giving individual performers and emerging companies the chance to devise and develop original work while removing potential barriers such as cost or sourcing suitable spaces.
