Weston Wallz street art festival returns

By Sarski Anderson  Friday Jul 22, 2022

Following its inaugural event in September 2001, the street art festival Weston Wallz is returning to Weston-super-Mare this summer.

The festival, organised by the Upfest team, in partnership with WSM Council and Culture Weston, will see murals being painted between July 23-31.

This year’s painters featured include some of Upfest’s favourite street artists, including Insane51 – travelling over from Athens – and local talents Curtis Hylton, Caryn Koh, Sian Storey, TeaOne, Emily Joy Rich, David Puck and Paul Monsters.

They are expected to bring their signature styles to numerous locations around the iconic seaside town, joining the current artworks on Weston’s street art trail.

Amongst the chosen locations for 2022 are the RNLJ Gift Shop, the Marine Lake, the old Oxford Corner Café, Olea and Old Post Office Lane.

The organisers are hopeful that Weston Wallz will continue in helping to elevate the town’s cultural identity, along with other summer 2022 initiatives such as the retired rig turned public art installation, SEE MONSTER.

“Weston is the perfect place to showcase such diverse, eclectic and thought-provoking artworks,” says Malcolm Nicholson from WSM Council.

Upfest co-founder, Steve Hayles, is similarly upbeat about the festival’s return. “Street art is a great way to engage the community and we’ve chosen a brilliant bunch of street artists to add to an already bustling art scene here in Weston.

“We’ve had a giant rooster, a geisha and lots of colour; we can’t wait to see what the next round of artists brings to the seafront.”
