Volunteer-powered mural painted at care home

By Bristol24/7  Thursday Apr 3, 2025

Bristol artist Isobel Higley has brought new life to a care home in Whitehall, leading a volunteer-powered mural project designed to support residents living with dementia.

The new mural at Saffron Gardens Care Home on Prospect Place was painted with the help of community volunteers.

It aims to bring vibrancy to the care home’s hallway while considering the unique visual needs of the residents.

The design uses block colours and simple shapes, as more intricate patterns can cause distress to individuals living with dementia.

“Dementia can affect how people perceive patterns and colours,” said Isobel, who lives in Shirehampton and is also Head of Marketing at Bristol24/7.

“By creating a bold and bright design, we hope to make the space more comforting for residents and their families.”

The project comes at a crucial time when care homes, including Saffron Gardens, are facing increased financial pressures.

“Whilst the team at Saffron gardens work hard to make the home and gardens welcoming and engaging for the residents, ever increasing costs hitting the care home hardest means they rely on volunteers to help” says Tessa Holmes, whose father has lived at Saffron Gardens for nearly a decade.

Bristol is known for its rich artistic culture, and this project is a shining example of how local creatives can use their talents to support vulnerable members of the community.

Isobel’s work not only brightens the care home but also serves as a reminder of the city’s strong community spirit.

Isobel added: “This project is incredibly close to my heart. Dementia has touched my own family, so I know how important it is to create environments that feel safe, welcoming, and uplifting.

“I’m grateful for the chance to give back to the community and to care home staff who provide such invaluable support”.

Tessa, who regularly visits her father, says “the mural will brighten up and welcome people to the home”.
