Visitors invited to explore many unique historic spaces and buildings in September
England’s largest free festival of history and culture is back in September, running from September 12-21.
As a community-led project, Heritage Open Days relies on the hard work of thousands of volunteers across the country.
The event is subsidised by the People’s Postcode Lottery, which allows all the participating buildings and spaces to open their doors for free, with the aim of reconnecting people with their local heritage.
is needed now More than ever
“Stories are told, traditions explored, and histories brought to life”, say organisers. “It offers the public a chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences.”

This year, there are many places of interest to visit in and around Bristol, including Tyntesfield, secret turret tours at Glenside Hospital Museum, a behind the scenes visit at the RWA, and an exploration of Ashton Gatehouse.
The Grade II-listed Midland Railway Signal Box will be open to the public at Warmley, now restored to what it would have looked like in the early 1960s, when it was fully operational.

Oldbury Pumping Station, Thornbury Town Hall, Arnos Vale Cemetery and Winterbourne Medieval Barn will also be welcoming visitors.
And the Julian Trust Night Shelter will be guiding people around the buildings that have been providing food and shelter to those experiencing homelessness for nearly 40 years.

Liam Montgomery is the marketing and projects manager for Heritage Open Days. “For many”, he says, “architecture is about more than just buildings; it’s really all about people, and the ways we interact with the world around us.
“This year’s festival is a great opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of local stories across England. It’s an open invitation to explore, learn, and be inspired by people and place.”
