Norman Gosney’s ‘Triggerines & Sentimentos’

By Martin Booth  Friday Oct 18, 2024

Norman Gosney grew up in Redland and relocated to New York in the 1970s where he became a prominent figure in the nightclub scene.

His career expanded to cities including Tokyo, Munich and Miami, and he also served as the art director for Marvel Comics.

Gosney is now returning to Bristol with his new art exhibition, Triggerines & Sentimentos, which is open for a private view at The Pit on Wells Road in Totterdown on Friday.

The exhibition promises to “explore the enduring allure of small figurines, from the ancient ‘Venus of Willendorf’ to modern-day pop culture icons”.

“Gosney’s work delves into the sentimental and often kitschy statuettes that once adorned the mantlepieces and wall units of generations, reflecting deep-seated attitudes and affections.

“His exhibition aims to re-contextualise these familiar figures, updating them to reflect contemporary sensibilities while retaining their original charm and function.

“Gosney’s artistic process involves recycling and renewing figurines found in dumpsters, charity stores and jumble sales.

“By incorporating discarded figures from comics, advertising and even Disney, he offers new interpretations of old dialogues, reinventing icons of the past in today’s vastly different world.”
