Creating photographs at home
Based in St Paul’s, the Real Photography Company bring traditional photography to new audiences, through events, workshops and projects.
Under normal circumstances, the group of photographers run exhibitions, lead courses and work with schools from their base at St Paul’s Learning Centre, which even has a darkroom.
However, since lockdown, they have been bringing traditional photography straight into people’s homes, releasing videos and instructions to make photographs with materials found in the home and how to use pinhole cameras.
The first set of guides were themed around World Pinhole Day and encouraged people to black out their rooms and, using light projected through a small hole, project the inverted outside world on their wall.

The second set of videos and instructions have been released in time for the International Day of Light on May 16.
The team at Real Photography Company are showing people how to create anthotypes, a type of image etched by the sun, using ingredients such as spinach, coffee and even vodka.

Director Ruth Jacobs said: “At a time when the community darkroom is closed, these free monthly projects will enable individuals and families to enter a world of art, photography, history, science, chemistry and experimental fun!”
