Banksy uses bombed buildings in Ukraine as latest canvas

By Martin Booth  Saturday Nov 12, 2022

Banksy’s latest work is a gymnast on the side of a building in Ukraine almost completely destroyed by shelling.

The Bristol artist has confirmed that he is behind the work of a gymnast doing a handstand amid debris in Borodyanka near Kyiv.

At least three other stencils appearing to be by Banksy have also been spotted in Ukraine but so far only one has been posted on his website and Instagram account – now the only way to confirm the authenticity of any new work or project.

Banksy’s trip to the war-torn country has produced his first new works since commemorative Colston Four t-shirts were sold in Bristol in December 2021.

Another stencil in Borodyanka depicts Russian president Vladimir Putin being judo-thrown to the floor by a child.

A third artwork shows a gymnast in a neck brace performing with a ribbon on top of a hole in the side of a building in Irpin, while a fourth in Kyiv sees two children sitting on a metal tank trap and using it as a seesaw.
