Artist collective buy their studio to secure its future
A building that has housed art studios for more than three decades is now under community ownership.
The artists who rent spaces in Jamaica Street Studios now own it thanks to a successful crowdfunder which also unlocked a government grant to help buy the building overlooking Turbo Island.
It means that the future of the listed building as a community space is now guaranteed.
is needed now More than ever
Writing on Instagram on Tuesday, the Jamaica Street Studios team said: “We are absolutely over the moon that, as of today, Jamaica Street Studios is the proud owner of 37-39 Jamaica Street!
“The building is in community ownership, for the arts, forever!
“We cannot thank you enough – we couldn’t have done it without you.
“We are so grateful to the government’s Community Ownership Fund, as well as John James Foundation, SMV and the Nisbet Foundation.
“Thank you to The Canteen, Studio Hive and Tom Price for supporting us as Founders during our Crowdfunder.
“& an extra special thank you to Estelle Talfan Davies, who loved her studio here, and was so generous to us. We miss you.”
