Paid environment placements for young people open for applications
An organisation working at the intersection of youth unemployment and environment sector diversity has launched its second round of applications.
The Youth Environment Service, aka YES Bristol, organises paid year-long placements with environment organisations for young people, helping them take a practical step into the industry.
With nearly one million young people currently out of work or education and a notable lack of diversity in the environment sector, the scheme is taking an innovative ‘potential over privilege’ approach.
CVs, prior experience and qualifications are not required to apply, tackling traditional barriers to entry while providing young people with the knowledge and confidence to build impactful and meaningful careers tackling issues such as the climate and nature crises.

“At a time when young people are facing an unstable job market, we are passionate about creating entry-level roles for young people to take their first step into a green career,” said Jess Clynewood, co-director of YES Bristol. “We are incredibly proud to be partnering with some amazing local organisations to make this happen.”
The jobs available in the current round of the programme are Conservation Ranger with Bristol Water, community engagement assistant with the Another Way environmental science organisation and outdoor / wellbeing youth worker with 224 Youth Zone in south Bristol. More opportunities will be added over the coming weeks.
YES will be sharing resources to help with putting together applications, and successful applicants will receive a real living wage, one to one coaching and a dedicated learning programme.
“We are really excited to be part of the YES Bristol programme this year, having followed their important work for a while now,” said Amy Bray of Another Way. “We know that the environmental sector is one of the least diverse and as a youth-led charity, attracting diverse talent and increasing paid opportunities for young people is a very high priority.
“The wraparound support that YES provides for the young applicants, as well as the guidance for our charity on best practice and accessible recruitment is extremely valuable. We hope that through our partnership we can change the narrative of who can work for environmental charities.”
Applications are open until March 8. Find out more at youthenvironmentalservice.co.uk/bristol-s26-opportunities
