New initiative hopes to bring climate and community centre to Broadmead
A new initiative is seeking to establish a community and climate hub in the centre of Bristol.
Power of Doing (POD), a Community Interest Company, is hoping to secure a building in the city centre, which will include information displays, a community fridge, and zero waste dispensers, among other facilities.
“(POD) will help deliver Bristol’s net zero by 2030 target, support people through the cost-of-living crisis, revitalise Bristol city centre, and nurture community resilience,” said Dr. Emma Geen, a writer and activist, currently supporting the initiative.
Power of Doing is part of the National Climate Emergency Centre Network and aims to empower citizens and communities to act on the climate crisis.
“The POD will bring together diverse groups and individuals from across Bristol to create solutions, relationships, and resilience in the face of the climate and ecological crisis,” the POD’s business plan explains.
The group is currently supported by over 30 local and international organisations, and is now approaching building owners to find a long-term base: “We’re also exploring finding a weekend centre while we wait to get a longer-term building to help drum up interest,” added Dr. Geen.
According to research conducted by the POD, 86 per cent of people in Bristol “care about the crisis, but the problem is so huge that it can be hard to know how to make a difference”.
The idea behind establishing a space is to create an inclusive community, giving people support and guidance towards protecting the environment.
The group are running their first drop-in session at Trinity Centre garden on August 25.
