Plans for digital billboard next to M32

By Bristol24/7  Thursday Aug 18, 2016

A mosque in Easton is hoping to sell off part of its car park to an advertising company who will erect a 50-ft pillar mounted by a digital billboard next to the M32.

The sale of the land off Stapleton Road will enable the Shah Jalal Mosque to pay for work extend its building in order to accommodate female worshippers.

But due to its impact on local surroundings, Bristol Civic Society are objecting to the plans that will be discussed by city councillors next week.

Plans for the new extension at the only purpose-built mosque in the South West also include a cold room and wash room for dead bodies.

Mosque trustee Ahmed Samad Chowdhury said: “The mosque is very popular. However, there is a problem as we cannot accommodate our ladies. They cannot come for worship and other activities.”

Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol, he added: “We submitted a petition containing 800 signatures from the local community. There has been tremendous support from all corners.

“It (the new pillar and screen) is not going to make any impact at all but I do understand that if something new comes to an area there will be a few people who won’t like it.”

If planning permission is not granted next week, Chowdhury says that the project will not be able to continue.
