First look at Temple Gate transformation plan

By Pamela Parkes  Friday Jan 9, 2015

Plans to transform Temple Gate – one of the original medieval gateways into Bristol – have been launched for public consultation.

The proposals include replacing the Temple Circus roundabout, close to Temple Meads station, with a new simplified road layout providing a more direct route for traffic with fewer traffic lights.

Planners claim this will create a better environment and more space for the hundreds of pedestrians and cyclists that use the area every day.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

This is the first step in a multi-million pound scheme to eventually totally transform the area with new buildings and a public square.

The proposals include:

  • A more direct route for traffic with fewer traffic lights and changes to access
  • A single crossing replacing three road crossings between the station and Brunel Mile
  • Space for new buildings and public square giving life to the area day and night
  • Better public transport links with upgraded stops and a new Metrobus stop
  • Improvements to cycle routes

Plans are on show at the Engine Shed until January 30 or can be seen at www.bristoltemplequarter.com/gate.

The consultation closes on February 18.
