New all-electric workspace achieves construction milestone

By Charlie Watts  Tuesday Oct 3, 2023

A new all-electric workspace for Bristol has achieved an important construction milestone as the building reached its highest point.

The Welcome Building, formerly 4 Glass Wharf in Bristol’s Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone, has been topped out.

The 207,000 sq ft building will have a “unique street” on the ground floor to host events, with an open kitchen as well as interactive art.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

The “new type of workspace” will also be an all-electric workspace and is connected to the Bristol Heat Network, from which it will extract all of its heat load.

It is a joint venture between EPISO 5, a fund managed by Tristan Capital Partners, and Candour, with main contractor Wates set to complete the work at the start of 2024.

It was topped out by James Brodie (managing director at Tristan Capital Partners) Toby Pentecost, (co-founder at Candour) and Mark Tant (managing director of Wates Construction).

Toby Pentecost, co-founder at Candour, said: “The topping out ceremony is always a significant moment with the building opening now only six months away.

“We’ve put a lot of emphasis on embracing wellness and sustainability throughout the build design and we’re aiming to provide occupiers with an experience more in line with a high-end hotel while also delivering a building which will set new sustainability standards in terms of reducing carbon footprint and environmental impact.”

James Brodie, managing director at Tristan Capital Partners, added: “Providing a high-quality amenity-rich experience within the building is a differentiating factor for us and it’s great to see the development reach this important milestone.

“Today’s modern and environmentally conscious occupiers are looking for higher standards and we expect the Welcome Building to help set and meet these requirements.”

Mark Tant, managing director of Wates Construction, commented: “Now that we have completed the structure of the Welcome Building, we are able see the sheer scale and potential of this landmark building and celebrate our fantastic team and supply chain partners who have made it possible, with over 300,000 hours worked to date.”
