Business West tackles skills shortage

By Laura Collacott  Tuesday Jan 31, 2017

Business West has launched a new skills service to tackle the skills shortage currently facing UK industry, as addressed in the Prime Minister’s Industrial Strategy announcement this month.

New businesses moving into the region and the development of large infrastructure projects mean the West of England is facing a skills crisis set to worsen over the next five years.

Skills West, a new skills service delivered by Business West, will provide free, impartial skills advice tailored to business needs, connecting businesses and skills providers.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

”Given the significant skills gaps that so many firms continue to face, the Industrial Strategy’s strong emphasis on boosting skills and further education will be cheered by businesses,” said Phil Smith, managing director. “The launch of Skills West at this crucial stage is perfect timing as businesses cannot wait to address skills shortages; they need to think smarter about their skills needs and requirements. That’s exactly what Skills West has been set up to do; we’ll provide a one stop advice and referral service to ensure that businesses have the talented individuals they need to achieve business growth.”

Operations director at training partner Western Training Providers Network, Alex Richards, added: “The current skills of individuals in the region are disconnected from the true needs of business.  Skills West is suitable for any business no matter what their stage of growth from start-ups, to businesses seeking to grow to those that are considering new markets.”

The £2 million contract is funded through the European Social Fund and Skills Funding Agency
