Business West appoints new CEO
Business West has appointed Douglas Ure as its new chief executive officer.
The former Marsh McLennan executive, who has held senior leadership roles in the UK and Asia, will take up the position in January.
Business West is one of the largest regional chambers of commerce in the UK which covers Bristol, Bath, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.
Ure will succeed long-serving managing director Phil Smith, who is retiring after more than 30 years.

Smith will remain with the organisation until the spring to support a smooth handover.
“Leading Business West for more than 30 years has been the highlight of a varied career from oil rigs to the City,” said Smith.
“Business West has offered a unique combination of commercial enterprise, public service and opportunities to make a difference to a place I love. I will be a keen observer of where Douglas can take it next.”
With a background in leading high-performance teams and advising on risk, strategy and transformation, Ure is expected to guide Business West through its next phase of growth.
“I am excited to lead Business West,” Ure said.
“I see this role as an opportunity to bring my skills, passion and experience to help South West businesses and the region to prosper. I will put all my energy into helping the organisation thrive and build on its successful foundations.

“The organisation’s work to support businesses, infrastructure and skills development is central to the region’s future and deeply aligned with my commitment to purposeful, responsible and sustainable growth.”
Business West chair Colin Skellett said Ure’s track record in driving transformation and forging strategic partnerships made him an “outstanding” choice to lead the organisation.
He also paid tribute to Smith’s three decades of service, describing his contribution as “exceptional”.
