Brabazon to play key role in government’s plans for new towns
A highly anticipated development in north Bristol is set to play a key role in the central government’s plans for new towns.
In a list of recommended locations for new towns released on Sunday, an expert task force highlighted a corridor of connected developments in South Gloucestershire, which includes parts of Brabazon, within the ‘West Innovation Arc’.
The new town designation for parts of Brabazon is likely to increase government support, which could accelerate development and investment in the upcoming infrastructure on the former Filton Airfield.
Director of planning and development at YTL Developments, Seb Loyn, sees the development in north Bristol as “a model for sustainable growth” in the country.
Loyn said: “We are proud that Brabazon has been included. With work already underway, this gives us a head start as one of the country’s flagship new towns.
“This designation is a vote of confidence in the vision we share with our partners and the community: to build a place with a soul, where culture, green space and opportunity come together.
“This designation gives us fresh momentum to deliver a thriving new town for Bristol and the South West, one that will stand as a model for sustainable growth across the UK.”
Brabazon, a YTL UK project, is currently predicted to create 30,000 new jobs with planning permission in place for 6,500 new homes in the area.
It is also predicted to contribute £5bn in social and economic value, with plans including a long-awaited arena as well as a new railway station, three schools, commercial spaces, and a network of parks and green spaces.
