Grundon boosts recycling efforts at popular campsite
A North Somerset campsite has achieved a recycling milestone in its journey towards environmental accreditation.
The recycling efforts of Petruth Paddock has received a significant boost thanks to its partnership with recycling specialists Grundon Waste Management.
In August, Petruth Paddocks saw a significant increase in its recycling efforts, with the ratio of recyclable to non-recyclable waste rising by 10 per cent compared to the same period in 2023. This achievement means that well over half of the 7.5 tonnes of waste generated at the site was recycled.
The campsite, which has welcomed 18,000 visitors this year, is on a mission to gain accreditation for its environmental performance.

Jules Sayer, the business owner who established Petruth Paddocks with his family 22 years ago, has implemented innovative methods to maintain high recycling rates. Sayer emphasises the importance of recycling in all customer communications, enforcing a zero-tolerance policy on black bin bags and encouraging guests to recycle as they go.
Sayer said: “Most campsites don’t bother with recycling at all. But it’s written all over our customer communications that we have a zero-tolerance policy on black bin bags and that people have to recycle as they go. If they don’t, they’ll be given the option to do it together or take it home.”
Sayer believes that recycling works best when everyone is actively involved. By employing young people to assist with recycling efforts, any issues are quickly resolved, and the youngsters gain valuable interpersonal skills.
“That’s very much the ethos we want to deploy here – not a battle, but a collaborative effort by all parties to do the right thing,” Sayer added.
Clear communication and the strategic deployment of younger workers have enabled Petruth Paddocks, a popular campsite in Cheddar, to surpass its year-on-year recycling performance during the busiest month of 2024.
Grundon Waste Management, the UK’s largest family-owned supplier of integrated waste management and environmental services, has been working with Petruth Paddocks for three years.
Led by sales lead Nick Malvern and supported by apprentice salesman Charlie Powell, Grundon has provided personalised service to help the campsite achieve its recycling goals.
Malvern said: “We’ve been really impressed with the way that Jules and his staff have emphasised the importance of recycling to Petruth Paddocks’ customer base.
“We know it can be hard to insist that customers behave in a certain way. But we also believe that people actually really want to be part of a greater purpose.”

Sayer and his team are committed to creating a welcoming environment where customers feel valued and are encouraged to return with friends and family. This commitment extends to their partnership with Grundon, which shares their values and supports their journey towards sustainability.

“It’s about loving our work and the people who visit us, so we’re pleased we have a waste management partner who understands the journey we’re on and embraces the same values,” Sayer concluded.
As more businesses begin to recognise the benefits of a waste partner who provides more than just competitive pricing, Grundon’s approach to customer service and sustainability continues to gain recognition in the sector.
