Bristol brewer marks sustainability milestone
A Bristol-based brewer has marked a significant sustainability milestone with the installation of a CO2 recovery system.
The award-winning brewer, Lost and Grounded, have installed a Dalum CO₂ recovery plant, enabling them to capture and reuse carbon dioxide produced during fermentation rather than relying on costly and unreliable bulk deliveries.
The system allows the Bristol-based brewery to recover up to a ton of CO₂ each week, halving its carbon footprint for every ton recaptured.
The initiative builds on the brewery’s wider sustainability efforts since 2016, which include cutting water use per litre of beer by half and reducing electricity and gas consumption by 40 per cent.

In June 2022, the brewery installed a 30-tonne malt silo, eliminating the need for plastic grain bags and preventing 15,000 polypropylene sacks from going to landfill each year.
Then, in February 2023, supported by a Green Business Grant from the West of England Combined Authority, they introduced an energy recovery system that captures steam from the brewing process to heat around 500 litres of water for reuse, which has cut the brewery’s gas consumption by 10 per cent.
