For the average 12-year-old, the original Jurassic Park from 1993 is a bit like having Steven Spielberg in charge of a school science lesson: before being let loose on the practical you have to sit through a lecture on theory, conducted by scarcely two-dimensional, eminently eatable grown-ups. There’s a subdued Jeff Goldblum as a mathematician, mumbling unconvincingly about Chaos Theory; Sam Neill, looking uncomfortable in an Indiana Jones panama as Spielberg’s traditional Peter Pan figure; Richard Attenborough, exuding more chummy luvviness than you’d expect of the “dark Walt Disney” of Michael Crichton’s novel; and Laura Dern as the palaeobotanist, winning out in the battle for a little elementary character development with a few feisty anti-sexist lines. Gone are Crichton’s lengthy meditations on the morality of genetic engineering. But from the moment the first stunningly realistic CGI brachiosaurus ambles into view and takes a mouthful of the nearest tree, none of this seems to matter. It doesn’t take long to get everyone in position for an exciting dino-crisis – triggered by a corrupt computer nerd and an angry storm – with a pair of eager nippers centre stage to dodge rampaging dinosaur herds and do battle with the fearsome velociraptors, while sundry adults meet a variety of unpleasant deaths.
