On the Town

Director
Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly
Certificate
U
Running Time
97 mins

Sailors Gabey (Gene Kelly), Chip (Frank Sinatra) and Ozzie (Jules Munshin) have just 24 hours of shore leave in New York City and intend to spend as much of it as they possibly can hoofing, crooning and chasing ladies.

The most cinematic of all MGM musicals, largely because it left the lot for a change and shot sequences on location in Manhattan, On the Town also gave Gene Kelly and choreographer Stanley Donen their break as directors back in 1949. Without it, there might never have been a Singin’ in the Rain.
