Horror in the Caves: Hereditary

Director
Ari Astor
Certificate
15
Running Time
127 mins

This one enjoyed a bit of invaluable publicity when its trailer was inadvertently shown to suitably traumatised Australian nippers waiting patiently for a screening of Peter Rabbit.

Billed as the scariest horror flick of the year, writer/director Ari Astor‘s feature debut was unveiled to universal acclaim at the Sundance Festival back in January. The set-up seems fairly generic – after the death of granny, a family find they have inherited a rather unpleasant fate – but the execution is top notch, avoiding cheapjack shocks in favour of an intense atmosphere of creeping dread.

It’s back on screen in spooky old Redcliffe Caves as part of Bristol Film Festival‘s ever-popular Halloween week Horror in the Caves season. Go here for ticket information.
