A whole decade ago, James Cameron’s long-gestating Avatar delivered on its promise to show off new toys and set a new benchmark for special effects spectaculars. In the future, Earth has sent a mining outfit to the verdant and vibrant planet Pandora, seeking the fabulously valuable mineral ‘unobtanium’. A corps of battle-hardened space marines are along to clear out any of the natives (tall, thin, blue-skinned creatures who look like bipedal hairless panthers in Native American gear) who object to the violation of an ecosystem they hold sacred. Earth’s secret weapons are avatars, artificially-grown Pandorans ‘piloted’ by humans whose brains can sync with new bodies. Frankly, you’ve guessed how it turns out: the exploiters get rough, the hero wavers but takes a stand, and it all ends with a big battle. As science fiction, this is primitive, but ‘Avatar’ bludgeons you into admiring it: images once possible only on Roger Dean album covers or Chris Foss paperback jackets are here, in breath-taking stereoscope; Pandora has a richly-detailed array of fascinating flora and fauna; and there’s a lot of impressive action.
