No one would claim that Disney’s 1959 bash at Charles Perrault‘s popular fairytale was one of the studio’s finest efforts. Indeed, it was the House of Mouse’s first feature to bomb at the box office. That’s possibly because Aurora is such a wet heroine. Still, Maleficent is a terrific villainess. The big Gothic showdown looks wonderful in CinemaScope too and is enormous fun.
Unless, that is, you’re afflicted by an excessive attack of ‘wokeness’, in which case the whole thing amounts to a disgraceful condoning of sexual assault, sends out the wrong message to children about consent and should be banned.
