Another ‘inspirational’ story from the director of Forrest Gump, anybody? Yep, Robert Zemeckis follows the underwhelming Allied with the true story of Mark Hogancamp (Steve Carell, in another of his awards season dramatic roles).
Like Zemeckis’s earlier The Walk, it’s based on a documentary. The 2010 film Marwencol told how Hogancamp was nearly beaten to death by five assailants outside a bar in New York. He wound up in a coma and wasn’t expected to survive, but eventually awoke with complete memory loss. To aid his recovery, he set about building the fictional WWII Belgian village of Marwencol in his back yard, populating it with dolls and action figures. As you do. Zemeckis makes extensive use of motion capture to flip between the fantasy Marwencol and the real world. But he was accused of santising the story after the release of the first trailer, which made no reference to the reason why Hogancamp was attacked: he’s a cross-dresser
