The Student

Director
Kirill Serebrennikov
Certificate

Running Time
118 mins

A timely and provocative Russian drama about religious fundamentalism. As the title suggests, it’s centred on a boggle-eyed, Bible-bashing student zealot who sets out to impose his own brand of mediaeval Christianity on his school, insisting that girls should be banned from wearing bikinis and creationism be taught alongside evolution.

Only the school science teacher has the courage to stand up to him, but the student simply turns nastier as he finds Biblical justification for homophobia and anti-Semitism. Lest you think director Kirill Serebrennikov is making this shit up, all the Biblical quotes cited are meticulously documented with onscreen captions.
