This film in Éric Rohmer‘s Comedies and Proverbs series is devoted to drippy Delphine, a Parisian secretary who can’t decide where to spend her holiday. Moreover, she refuses to admit that her latest man has dumped her and continually moans about the lack of chaps in her life, despite the advances of several presentable young French fellows. As with most other Rohmer heroines, you feel like wringing her neck after an hour or so. Thanks to Marie Rivière‘s improvised performance, Delphine is not unconvincing nor even uninteresting, but she is ultimately enervating. It’s a film in which nothing much happens, but it happens quite pleasantly.
It’s back on screen in the Watershed’s En Vacances d’été… with Eric Rohmer August Sunday brunch season.
