Thanks to the efforts of the Bristol Film Office, lots of movies are shot in Bristol these days, each enjoying plenty of ‘Hollywood Comes to Bristol’-style parochial press ballyhoo. Alas, not all of them are much cop. Stan & Ollie, on the other hand, is one we can be proud of.

It’s a warm and funny twilight years biopic charting the great comedy duo’s final UK tour in the early 1950s. (This included a date at the Bristol Hippodrome on September 29, 1952, fact fans.) They’d hoped this return to music hall would reignite their career, but Laurel and Hardy were decidedly out of fashion at the time, audiences were small, and Ollie was ailing. It’s a straightforward, moving little film, elevated by superb performances by Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly in the title roles. Watch out for Princes Wharf and the area around the Hippodrome, which is where scenes were shot in April 2017. Go here for our full review.
