The late Alan Parker’s screen version of the Andrew Lord Webber musical tells the rags-to-riches story of Eva Peron efficiently, more than once shrewdly suggesting career similarities between Eva and Madonna. This may be why Ms. Ciccone gives her best acting (then again, perhaps it’s because she’s confined to singing).
Jimmy Nail proves surprisingly well cast as the travelling musician with whom she has an early infatuation, while Antonio Banderas pops up throughout in a bewildering array of occupations to provide a much-needed narrative thread and plenty of exaggerated Latin inflection. Only Jonathan Pryce seems suprlus to requirements as he pads around in a benign Prozac haze with a smug but distant smile. At 135 mins, some of the later scenes do tend to drag, but as a spectacle it’s hard to beat.
