Billed as Robert Redford‘s final acting role, this latest codger true-crime comedy follows hard on the heels of King of Thieves.
Redford plays septuagenarian career criminal Forrest Tucker, who was particularly adept at escaping from the slammer. After scarpering from San Quentin at the grand old age of 70, the wrinkly wrong ‘un embarks upon a string of heists with his fellow crumblies Tom Waits and Danny Glover (clearly no longer too old for this shit). In hot pursuit of what is inevitably dubbed the over-the-hill gang is deliciously named Texan lawman John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who has a grudging regard for their old-school dedication to crime. Redford’s movie star charisma is undimmed, while fellow veteran Sissy Spacek also shines as his pensioner love interest. It’s adapted for the screen from David Grann’s New Yorker article of the same title by David Lowery, who made his name with Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and whose diverse oeuvre includes the Pete’s Dragon remake and A Ghost Story.
