Daytrips to take from Bristol

By Louise Knight  Monday Oct 29, 2018

While Bristol has plenty going on to keep you busy, a change of scenery never hurt anyone. There are some wonderful places to explore just a short distance from Bristol, so don’t miss out.

Bath
A mere ten minutes from Bristol on a direct train, Bath is bursting at the seams with culture. Known for its natural hot springs and Georgian architecture, explore the compact city centre on foot to see why it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visit the Roman Baths dating back to 43AD and taste the world famous mineral water, discover more about the city’s most illustrious resident at the Jane Austen Centre, and stop in at one of the best coffee shops in the UK, Colonna & Small’s.

In the summer you can swim in the river at beautiful spots like Warleigh Weir, while in winter the area around the Abbey is full of Christmas markets. The city is a retail haven all year round, with an impeccable selection of independent retailers and major high street brands.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Weston-super-Mare

Enjoy an old-school seaside getaway in Weston, just a 30-minute journey away from Bristol. The Grand Pier has rides, penny arcade games and fast food, while along the promenade is a Ferris wheel, crazy golf, an indoor go-kart track and the Seaquarium. If chilling out is more your thing, there are miles upon miles of flat sandy beach.

Cheddar Gorge
Situated in the gorgeous Mendip Hills, less than an hour’s drive away from Bristol, and home to one of the nation’s favourite cheeses, the village of Cheddar sits at the bottom of a breathtaking limestone gorge in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Cheddar Gorge is perfect for adventurers and thrill-seekers: the area offers caving, rock climbing, abseiling and cliff-top gorge walks. The Museum of Prehistory and a pub lunch ensure a fun day out for all.
