Search is on for Bristol’s conker champion

By Joy Molan  Friday Sep 18, 2015

A dinner for two at a Michelin star restaurant, a gleaming trophy and a shot at the bigtime on the world stage are all up for grabs at the first Bristol Conker Championships.

That’s right, the Bristol Conker Championships is a thing – and is being held for the first time at the Chandos Road Street Fair on Sunday, September 27.

The competition’s winner will get a dinner for two at Wilks, a trophy to take pride of place on their mantelpiece and the chance to ‘conker’ the world by competing at an international level.

Organiser Peter Ellis, secretary of Chandos Road traders’ association, hopes to find the top conker player in town and rekindle our love for the sport.

“We welcome people of all ages and sizes to take part – as it’s a game of skill, not strength. We will provide the conkers and laces, so people just need to come with a steady hand and good co-ordination,” he said.

The Chandos Road street fair promises to be a lively celebration of the Redland area. The busy programme of events includes live music, food stalls, market stalls and theatre.

“There will be plenty going on during the day and it promises to be a fun, family day out,” says Ellis, who also owns Accommodation Unlimited.

The competition will be the first of its kind held in Bristol and will follow championship rules to ensure a fair knock out.

Those looking for an edge over the competition might be interested in Ellis’ old playground tricks.

“We used to cook our conkers to make them harder then play with them,” he reveals.

Despite blaming health and safety for killing off the once popular playground game, Ellis can be seen sporting a luminous green high visibility jacket. Clearly, he doesn’t plan to take any chances before the big day. With 32 contestants all vying for the top spot, the competition is expected to be fierce.
