Running the half-marathon in memory of Maddy
Friends and former teammates of Maddy Lawrence will be taking part in the Great Bristol Run in May to remember her and raise money for a charity set up in her memory.
Maddy’s Mark is a charity that supports the mental wellbeing of girls and young women by building resilience, confidence and camaraderie; funding school programmes and partnering with clubs in an attempt to make rugby accessible to all who wish to play.
In March 2022, Maddy dislocated her hip while playing rugby for UWE and the 20-year-old sadly died from sepsis in Southmead Hospital two weeks after the injury.
is needed now More than ever
Eleven players from Frenchay-based Dings Crusaders Mavericks will be running in the 10k and half-marathon to raise money for Maddy’s Mark.
Many of the runners played with Maddy while she was a student at UWE and have played in the annual Maddy’s Match at Lockleaze Sports Centre which sees alumni take on the current university 1st XV.
Erin Towne, 24, a nurse who lives in Cotham, and one of those taking part in the Great Bristol Run, said: “This lets Maddy live on with her spirit and her positivity and her smiling.”

Dings Crusaders Mavericks manager Beccie Kettleborough, 35, from Weston-super-Mare, added: “Because it’s rugby and what that stands for, we want to do it as a team.
“We’re all coming together to raise awareness of Maddy’s Mark… we’re going to go from rugby training into race training.”
