City well-beaten in play-off semi-final first leg

By Martin Booth  Thursday May 8, 2025

Fans gathered with flags and pyros in Greville Smyth Park before Bristol City’s biggest match in almost two decades.

There was much less exuberance after the final whistle, however, with a 3-0 deficit meaning that Liam Manning’s men have a mountain to climb in the Championship play-off semi-final second leg at Bramall Lane on Monday night.

City were reduced to ten men just before half-time with Sheffield United scoring from the resultant penalty and thereafter being in control.

“Up until the red card, I thought it was a really good Championship match,” said Manning.

But he said that a “huge huge error” from the referee “completely changed the course of the game”.
