Bristol City relegated from Women’s Super League
Bristol City’s stay in the Women’s Super League will only last one season after defeat against Manchester City on Sunday evening confirmed their relegation from the top flight.
Only their first home win of this campaign would have been enough for the Robins to avoid the drop.
But despite predictions of a cricket score to help improve Man City’s goal-difference in the title battle against Chelsea, it took the City currently at the top of the league just over an hour to finally score against the City rooted to the bottom and now destined for the drop after this 4-0 defeat.
is needed now More than ever
The goal that broke the deadlock and opened the floodgates was a sweetly struck left-footed shot from outside the box from Mary Fowler, with Fowler scoring again after a deft connection from a cross, the third an unfortunate own goal from Amy Rogers and the fourth a header from Alex Greenwood in the last seconds of the match.
The result means that next season, Bristol City will be be playing in the Championship, just two divisions above Bristol Rovers Women who recently won promotion to the National League.
Despite numerous shots (30 for Man City compared to three for Bristol City), former Bristol City player Lauren Hemp and her England colleague Chloe Kelly could not find a way past Shae Yanez in the Robins goal.
Man City had 76 per cent of the possession but it was not all one-way traffic, with chances for the home side falling to Amalie Thestrup and Rodgers, before Fowler’s moment of magic finally sealed the fate of Lauren Smith’s side with two games still to play.
