‘The last two years have transformed my perspective on life and business’
From the humble beginnings of a takeaway hatch in the middle of the pandemic, to two fully fledged cafes that work exclusively with regional suppliers, employ young people in the city and support local charities and events; it’s been quite the journey for Burra, which recently celebrated its second birthday.
Running a hospitality operation alongside a full-time career in professional sport has not been plain sailing.
But the past 24 months has delivered new experiences, friendships and life lessons that has transformed my perspective on life and business.
At a time when the industry is feeling the pinch of the cost-of-living crisis, it’s so important to have mentors, friends and colleagues to lean on for support and guidance.
That’s why Bristol is, in my opinion, one of the most dynamic and inclusive cities to live and work in. The people care about their community and each other.

In the past two years, we launched our flagship site in Redland and our sister site on Gloucester Road.
We’ve hosted evening events and taster menus, countless birthdays and barbecues, a Christmas street party and even my wedding!
We’ve been named Bristol’s best new cafe by Bristol24/7, supported a campaign for the outstanding eco-charity Lamina POP, and hosted a number of podcasts and media interviews on-site.
What truly excites me is that I believe, along with our excellent team and co-owners, that the best is yet to come.

So this is a big thank you from me and the team to every single one of our suppliers and tireless staff who has made Burra far more than just a cafe; but an independent hub in the community where families can come and enjoy great food and drink and celebrate everything unique about our city.
Finally, I can’t sign off without a big thank you to the customers that have helped support us through these first two years.
Without your insight, feedback and loyalty, Burra would have remained as a pipe dream conjured up in a rugby changing room!
