Babbasa launches campaign to support Bristol’s marginalised young people

By Robin Connolly  Thursday Jul 15, 2021

Babbasa’s newest campaign aims to let marginalised young people know that their struggles are seen and support is on hand.

Pravanya Pillay, outreach leader for the St Paul’s-based social enterprise, says communities in inner-city Bristol are “facing a challenge like never before”, with rising youth unemployment rates and the ongoing impact of the pandemic.

We’ve Got Your Back is aimed at 16 to 25-year-olds from ethnically diverse and low-income backgrounds. It aims to reach and engage with those looking to achieve their employment and enterprising goals in the wake of a tough 16 months.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

They hope to remind people of Babassa’s ongoing initiatives, including one-to-one support, safe spaces and training with access to work opportunities.

The campaign will also call on guardians, community organisers, city leaders and employers to work towards a common goal of seeing these young people achieve their career ambitions.

Pravanya said: “The inner-city Bristol community is facing a challenge like never before – we’ve got to support young people to flourish when all the odds are against them.

“We can do it if we work together. Together we can let young people know that we’ve got their backs.”

The organisation’s recent Bridge to Equality report found that 74 per cent of Bristol’s young generation have faced increased stress and anxiety in lockdown, coupled with financial pressure and a loss of sense of purpose.

It also found that 40 per cent of those asked have worries surrounding their future career prospects.

To combat this, Babassa’s support schemes include chances for leadership opportunities, access to professional mentorship, skills workshops, access to work experience and access to Babbasa TV.
