Voting begins in Bristol local elections

By Martin Booth  Thursday May 2, 2024

Voting started on Thursday morning in Bristol’s local elections.

Seventy council seats in each of the city’s 34 wards are up for grabs, with the Avon & Somerset police & crime commissioner election also taking place.

But for the first time in 12 years, we will not be voting for a mayor following a referendum in 2022 that scrapped the position.

Marvin Rees will remain as mayor, however, until a new leader of the council is sworn in on Tuesday.

Counting of the ballot papers will take place from Friday afternoon, with two counts taking place simultaneously in City Academy in Redfield and Oasis Academy in Brislington.
