Vaccine centre of excellence opens in Bristol
Pfizer’s new Centre of Excellence for Epidemiology of Vaccine-preventable Diseases has been opened at the University of Bristol by health secretary, Matt Hancock.
The centre is the first of its kind in the world outside the USA, with its research work supporting the design, development and use of next-generation vaccines.
It has been funded by £4.6m from Pfizer to conduct studies in hospitals and the community to identify and measure the burden of specific vaccine-preventable infectious diseases.
University of Bristol vice-chancellor, professor Hugh Brady, said that the university is “honoured to have been selected by Pfizer as one of its global vaccine centres of excellence”.
He said: “Bristol’s expertise, collaborative links with two NHS Trusts and other health partners make it uniquely placed for conducting world-leading vaccine research.”
Dr Luis Jodar, senior vaccine president and chief medical officer for vaccines at Pfizer, added: “We’re proud to have partnered with the University of Bristol to open Pfizer’s first centre of epidemiological excellence outside of the US.
“The findings from research already underway at this centre will provide supporting evidence to inform recommendations on the use of vaccines worldwide.”
