Urban otter spotted in Easton

By Bristol24/7  Monday Jan 30, 2017

An urban otter has been spotted playing the River Frome in Bristol.

The animal was filmed by police officers as it swam in the river, which runs through Eastville Park and alongside the M32.

Otter numbers declined dramatically in the 1950s, largely because of the use of toxic pesticides in agriculture. By the 1970s it was believed that otters had been wiped out in most of lowland England.

But after the pesticide was banned the otter has made a successful comeback, returning to many urban rivers.

Another film of the otter swimming in the River Frome has been posted on the Friends of Eastville Park Facebook page.
