Transforming a ‘bleak and desolate’ space
Bristol Cathedral chapter clerk Wendy Matthews has described the area between Bristol Cathedral and Central Library as “desolate, bleak and off-putting”.
Cathedral bosses have now appointed an award-winning firm of landscape architects to sort it out.

is needed now More than ever
Early ideas to change this forgotten space into something which works better for the community and for cathedral visitors include restoring the connection between the medieval church and its historic gatehouse; and to make an integrated space that knits with College Green, the Cathedral School site and the harbourside beyond.
The space could be softened with planting, used for pop-up food stalls and host events.

“Have you ever stood and looked at the space between Bristol Cathedral and the Library?” asks Matthews. “It is desolate, bleak and off-putting, with unattractive scaffolding and difficult access. It is the very opposite of a positive, open welcome that the Cathedral wants to give.”
Landscape architects Askew Nelson will be lead on the design and consultation, with members of the public invited to a drop-in public consultation information evening at the Cathedral on Tuesday, March 8 to share their ideas and thoughts.
