Social distancing – Southville-style

By Martin Booth  Wednesday May 6, 2020

Bristol artist Luke Jerram and his 11-year-old son Nico have been having fun with a bubble ball near their home in Southville.

Jerram had the ball at his art studio in the Paintworks, having used it last year to put lights in and keep them dry within the inflatable Moon he floated down the docks last year.

“As a user of TikTok, Nico is keen to make an interesting videos to show his friends,” Jerram told Bristol24/7.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

“Creating the film was really a homeschool learning project. An opportunity for us to work together on a fun project and for him to learn about the basics of filming and editing.”

Jerram has previously created the water slide down Park Street, installed street pianos in cities across the world and made large-scale glass models of viruses including Covid-19 before the pandemic.

He added: “The ball is fun to be in, but it gets a bit sweaty in there after a time, and there’s a huge static build up which means his hair stands on end too!

“We’ve had a some nice smiles and fun comments as we roll down the streets of Southville. Its just a bit of fun really, a lighthearted response to the situation.”
