Severn tolls to be abolished

By Bristol24/7  Friday Jul 21, 2017

It currently costs from £6.70 to £20 per vehicle to enter Wales from England via the Severn bridges, but ensuring that you have enough money to pay the tolls will be a thing of the past by the end of next year.

Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns made the surprise announcement and said the decision would be a major boost to the local economy.

About 25 million journeys are made across the two bridges each year, with a study commissioned by the Welsh Government suggesting that the removal of tolls would boost the Welsh economy by £100m.

Another report, however, predicted just halving the tolls would mean a 17 per cent increase in traffic along the M4 and surrounding areas either side of the crossings.

The two crossings are currently owned and run by a private consortium but will revert to Highways England once the cost of building the second crossing is repaid, when the tolls will then be scrapped.
