Seven injured after police chase suspected kidnapper through Bristol

By Martin Booth  Sunday May 1, 2022

Two pedestrians in the city centre were hit by a car driven by a suspected kidnapper being chased by police, with three people later hospitalised after a police car hit their vehicle on the M32 as the chase continued.

The pursuit began late on Saturday evening and ended in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A member of the public contacted police after reporting that a woman appeared to have been pulled into a car against her will on Anchor Road, with the chase going through the city centre, onto the M32 and then along the A4174 before finishing in Keynsham.

The silver Ford was stopped by police officers on Wellsway in Keynsham at around 12.20am on Sunday.

A man in his mid-20s was arrested for multiple offences including dangerous driving and failing to stop for police. He was taken to hospital but his condition is not believed to be life-threatening.

A female passenger in the car was also taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries, with safeguarding measures put in place for her welfare.

During the police pursuit, the car was involved in a collision with two pedestrians on St Augustine’s Parade who required medical attention for minor injuries.

The second collision occurred on the northbound carriageway of the M32, with the three people taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to police involvement prior to the collisions occurring.
