Roof of primary school damaged during balloon flight

By Hannah Massoudi  Friday Aug 8, 2025

The roof of a primary school and nursery was damaged on Friday morning by a hot air balloon attempting to land.

The descent of the balloon that was partaking in the first flight of the Bristol Balloon Fiesta weekend got a little too close and clipped the building in Knowle West.

Fortunately, the passengers in the JLL-branded balloon were fine with the pilot of the balloon managing to continue after hitting the school and landing safely in the school’s playing field.

Video of the incident shows the basket of the balloon at a perilous angle after it crashed into the roof of the school.

Claire Robinson, regional director for South West Primary at Oasis Community Learning confirmed in a statement that the roof of Oasis Academy Connaught on Melvin Square had been damaged.

The school was unoccupied due to the summer holidays and no-one harmed; with site manager, Rob Rice, able to attend very swiftly.

Rice discovered that “the incident caused minor damage to the roof tiles”, which are being repaired by a contractor as soon as possible.

Clare remained in good spirits: “Most, importantly, we’re incredibly thankful that everyone us safe and that the balloon was able to carefully land in the school field, without disturbing the festivities.”
