Red light green light could be added to remodelled Centre

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Feb 12, 2025

There probably won’t be a huge robotic doll and machine gunners shooting dead the losers.

But red light green light, the game made famous by the Netflix show Squid Game, could be added to Bristol’s remodelled Centre.

It’s one of a number of games also including chess, draughts and snakes & ladders that might sit alongside a new artwork to replace the fountains.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

For the uninitiated, red light green light is a version of the children’s game known as grandma’s footsteps; just one with a grislier outcome.

If you are spotted moving, you are killed.

A survey is currently underway in order to shape the future of the area that is officially called Centre Promenade.

Its future look is described as a “new landmark” which will feature “an iconic new artwork” as part of “an effort to rejuvenate one of Bristol’s most cherished public spaces”.

Artist Oshii is being supported by Bristol City Council, Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District and the Bristol Legacy Foundation “to craft a piece of art that captures the diverse spirit of our city”.
