Protest planned against Trade Union Bill

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday Oct 28, 2015

Trade Unions and anti-austerity campaigners will join forces in a protest in the centre of Bristol against the Government’s Trade Union Bill.

The “right to strike” march on Monday will bring together the Bristol People’s Assembly, South West TUC, Unite and Unison among others.

Protesters will be converging at 5.15pm by the fountains to protest against the bill which tightens the rules on calling a strike.

Under the new proposals, unions will have to give twice the amount of notice before a strike, and restrictions will be lifted to allow employees to bring in agency workers to cover strikers.

“Whether you’re in one or not, this full-on assault on our unions is designed to undermine resistance to the Tory agenda of austerity, privatisation and a low-pay, rights-free workforce, so let’s all show our solidarity,” said the protest’s organisers.

Business Secretary Sajid Javid, who grew up in Bristol, insists the laws are necessary to stop the “endless” threats of industrial action.
